About Floating Stairs DC
Floating Stairs DC exists for one purpose. We design and fabricate floating staircase systems for Washington, DC''''s finest homes, holding every project to an engineering standard that most residential contractors never reach. We are a focused, specialist studio with a single discipline, and we have built our entire operation around doing that one thing better than anyone else in the District.
The Dedicated Luxury Division of Capitol Iron Works DC
We are the dedicated luxury division of Capitol Iron Works DC, one of the most respected structural fabrication operations in the Mid-Atlantic region. That relationship is the foundation of everything we deliver. When you commission a floating staircase from Floating Stairs DC, the steel behind it is cut, welded, and finished by the same master fabricators who produce structural ironwork for commercial and institutional projects across the region. You receive boutique design attention and industrial-grade engineering in the same project, from the same organization.
We are not a general renovation company that installs stairs as one of many services. We are a focused, specialist studio with a single discipline, and we have built our entire operation around doing that one thing better than anyone else in the District.
The Heritage Behind the Work
Capitol Iron Works DC carries an ironworking heritage built on precision fabrication, AWS certified welding, and a shop culture that treats every component as a structural responsibility rather than a production task. That heritage is not background detail. It is the reason our floating staircases perform the way they do years after installation.
When we established Floating Stairs DC as a specialist division, the intention was clear. Washington, DC''''s luxury residential market deserved access to the same fabrication quality that Capitol Iron Works delivers at the commercial level, translated into a design-forward residential experience. The gap between what most DC homeowners were being offered and what was actually achievable with proper engineering was significant. We built this division to close that gap entirely.
Where Modern Engineering Meets Old-World Craft
We work at the intersection of two disciplines that rarely share the same project. The first is precision digital engineering. Every staircase we design begins as a full 3D BIM digital twin of your space. We model the staircase within your actual floor plan, ceiling heights, and structural context before a single piece of steel is touched. Cantilevered physics, tread deflection ratios, and anchor load distributions are all calculated within the digital model and verified by our structural engineer before fabrication begins.
The second discipline is hand-finished artisanship. Once our CNC plasma and water-jet cutting systems produce components to within fractions of a millimeter, our fabricators take over with hand-grinding, hand-patination, and hand-finishing techniques developed over years inside the Capitol Iron Works shop. The result is a staircase that has the structural precision of a digitally engineered product and the surface character of something made by craftspeople who care about the details no algorithm will ever notice.
Our Credentials and Community Role
Our fabrication facility operates to AISC, American Institute of Steel Construction, standards throughout. Every welder on our team holds AWS certification. Every structural drawing is stamped by a licensed DC engineer, and every installation is completed under an active DCRA licensed contractor registration. We carry full commercial general liability insurance and workers compensation coverage on every project. These are not incidental credentials. They are the baseline we believe every homeowner in the District deserves from any contractor they allow into their home.
Washington, DC is unlike any other American city in the demands it places on the people who work within it. Historic Preservation Review Board requirements, DCRA structural permitting, ANC community engagement, and the architectural sensitivity required to work inside Federal, Victorian, and mid-century interiors all require a level of local knowledge that cannot be acquired quickly. We have built that knowledge over years of working alongside DC architects, interior designers, and historic preservation consultants across every ward in the District.
Meet the Team Behind Every Project
Every Floating Stairs DC project is led by our core team of structural engineers, BIM designers, and Capitol Iron Works DC master fabricators. We do not subcontract our fabrication. We do not hand your project to a third-party installer after the design phase. The same organization that models your staircase digitally builds it physically and installs it in your home. That continuity is deliberate, and it is the reason our installation tolerances are consistently tighter than anything a fragmented supply chain can produce.
